The Massachusetts Movers Association has been serving the moving and storage industry for over 100 years! To maintain that type of longevity the association has both grown in membership and adapted to a myriad of changes in the industry. One only needs to look at the history of the industry to understand that the need for the MMA is greater today than ever.
Since its inception in the late 1800’s the industry has grown from horse drawn wagons to small two axel trucks that were christened “moving vans.”
The end of World War II saw incomes rise and more people on the move then every before. Storage became an integral part of the moving business. The boom has never stopped for moving and storage services!
Today the moving and storage industry is a $15 billion industry in the United States.
Self-Storage units is even more massive bring in $22 billion annually.
While strict regulations can strangle an industry, the deregulation of trucking in 1980 brought new problems. This opened a floodgate of new moving companies.
While deregulations allowed many new and honest entrepreneurs to enter the business, it also opened the doors for many marginal operators to sprout up.
Since then, and with the inception of the internet, consumer complaints have risen. A few bad apples have made the industry look bad for premium moving and storage businesses that belong to trade associations such as the MMA.
The Massachusetts Movers Association is now dedicated more than ever to making sure that our members follow a code of ethics, that consumers are protected from marginal operators, that federal and state laws and regulations benefit both the mover and customer, and that the latest business practices, customer service techniques and safe equipment are used to facilitate a move.
